When you hear “what is technology” what rings a bell? It may sound like something out of a science fiction film or something that must be powered by electricity. Technology conjures up images of the extremely complex, but energy does not have to be.
Technology is the practical application of scientific knowledge, whether in industry or our daily lives. So, in general, whenever we apply our scientific knowledge to achieve a specific goal, we are employing technology.
There’s a little more to it than that. Modern technology usually entails a specific piece of equipment, which can be incredibly simple or stunningly complex. It could be anything from the invention of the wheel to computers and MP3 players.

You can also categorize technology based on its intended use. There is industrial and manufacturing technology, medical technology, communications technology, and other types of technology.

Why should I use cutting-edge technology?
As an individual, you want to use the most recent technology because it allows you to use new products and services that older technologies do not support. For example, a computer that is 20 years old will not be able to run the most recent operating system, software, or games. Most companies also discontinue support for older products in favor of newer products, leaving you vulnerable to attacks or unable to find solutions to problems.
As a business, you want your organization to use cutting-edge technology because it can give you a competitive advantage. Newer technologies enable your employees and the company as a whole to work more efficiently and save resources. A company that uses computers, for example, would fare far better than one that only uses typewriters.
Why wouldn’t you want to use cutting-edge technology?
Trying to always have the latest technology can be costly, especially if the technology has a short life cycle. Trying to always have the latest smartphone, for example, is prohibitively expensive for the majority of people.
Moving or upgrading from older technology can also be difficult, time-consuming, and may introduce new problems with some technologies. For example, upgrading an older computer’s operating system to a new operating system may introduce new issues and necessitate relearning a new operating system.
When should I upgrade to newer technology?

If you can wait a few weeks or months after it is released, there should be fixes and updates to problems that other customers experienced. If you apply those fixes and updates, you will be less likely to encounter these problems.
